Early on this season, South Carolina’s offense has struggled to find balance.

While the pass game has been fairly solid, Shane Beamer can’t seem to get his run game going. The Gamecocks have gotten 1,072 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air, but just 159 yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground.

Moving forward, Beamer wants to be able to find some balance on offense, but he also understands that sometimes you just have to do what you’re good at, and for South Carolina, that’s throwing the ball.

“I’ve said it before, I want to be a team that has the ability to run the ball when we need to run it and can throw the ball when we need to throw it, to me that’s balance,” Beamer said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “There’s no question, we haven’t run the ball consistently enough in our 3 games this season. We need to be better, but I don’t think we’re going to continue to pound our head against the wall if we’re in a game and we’re having a hard time running it, but we’re throwing the ball successfully to make a point to say we’ve gotta keep running it.”

This weekend, South Carolina has a chance to bounce back from the Georgia loss against Mississippi State. Beamer will be looking to get his run game going against the Bulldogs, even if it isn’t pretty.

“There’s going to be some runs that we call that may look ugly just because of Mississippi State’s defensive system in the way they play,” Beamer said. “And we also need to understand that we need to continue to come back to those runs and be willing to keep calling them also.”
