The South Carolina Gamecocks capped a tremendous two-day recruiting spree with a fourth commitment Saturday night.

Defensive back Marlon Character, a four-star prospect from Atlanta, pledged to coach Steve Spurrier and SC, joining strong safety P.J. Blue, offensive tackle Akeem Cooperwood and cornerback Chris Smith.

Character, 6-foot and 180 pounds, spent the day with coaches Lorenzo Ward and Jon Hoke before committing.

“I will be able to play five positions, and there’s more opportunity to get on the field and showcase my talent,” Character said, according to The State newspaper. “Coach Ward is not afraid to play freshmen at corner. I would be one of the biggest ones he has. Most schools are recruiting me to play safety.”

Character immediately becomes the Gamecocks’ highest-rated defensive player in the 2016 class, just ahead of Blue. So South Carolina added several pieces to the back end of its defense Saturday.

The quartet of commitments launched South Carolina from 14th to 11th in the SEC, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The team also has jumped from eight to 12 commitments. The team also has doubled its four-star commitments from two to four.
