While the SEC was deciding its basketball champion on Sunday, South Carolina scored a win on the football field by landing defensive tackle LaMarius Benson. Benson, rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports Composite, is the 65th player at his position and the 974th player overall in 2018.

Benson looks to be a space filler in the middle for Will Muschamp’s defense due to his big, 6-2, 300-pound frame. At Eastside High School, he showed versatility, playing both offensive guard and defensive tackle. Against that level of competition, he blew away the opposition by getting low and using his strength to impose his will.

The Covington, Georgia native, who received his first SEC offer from the Gamecocks, chose South Carolina over offers from Troy, Maryland, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State. He will be the Gamecocks second addition to the class, along with fellow three-star wide receiver Darius Rush. Though it is still early in the process, it took less than a month for Benson to make his decision after being offered on February 25th.
