South Carolina will host Auburn transfer quarterback Robby Ashford on a visit soon, according to a report.

Ashford will also reportedly take visits to Tulane and Utah as he looks to find a new home. He has two years of eligibility remaining and South Carolina has been hunting for a quarterback in the portal — a hunt that, so far, has been fruitless.

Depending on what becomes of a 14-day restraining order that briefly lifts the NCAA’s rule against two-time undergraduate transfers, Ashford could be able to play right away. If that TRO, part of an ongoing lawsuit over transfer restrictions, leads to a permanent rule change, Ashford could be an immediate answer to the Gamecocks’ quarterback issue. If the rule against two-time transfers remains in place, Ashford would have to sit a year before being able to play one.

He began his career at Oregon, spending two seasons with the program but never quite finding a footing.

He transferred to Auburn ahead of the 2022 season and took over as the starter partway through. He battled with Payton Thorne for the starting job ahead of the 2023 campaign. Though he lost the battle, he had a role early in the season but that role diminished as the year went on.

During his 22 appearances for the Tigers, Ashford had 1,758 passing yards and nine touchdowns against nine interceptions while completing 137 of his 277 passes (49%). He also ran the ball 199 times for 927 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Gamecocks were believed to be in a strong position to land Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann, but he committed to LSU. They had interest in Texas transfer Maalik Murphy, but he committed to Duke.

Depth is needed, with the room including just redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers and true freshman Dante Reno.
