One area that has been particularly troubling for South Carolina this season is the second half, as the Gamecocks have given up second-half leads in losses to North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee.

Coach Will Muschamp laid out a series of stats at his regular weekly press conference on Tuesday ahead of the Vanderbilt game at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.

“We’re not getting the production we need, especially in the second half,” Muschamp said. “I don’t think that it’s one thing, I think that it’s multiple things.”

Muschamp noted that the Gamecocks have had 10 turnovers against Power 5 opponents this year, and seven of them have been in the second half. There have also been six possessions end on downs as the team couldn’t convert a fourth down try.

The coach estimated about 30 percent of the team’s possessions in that situation have ended with a turnover in one form or another.

“Why is that happening?,” Muschamp said. “We’ve been ineffective consistently throwing the football. I think that goes to multiple areas of protection, it goes from route running, precise routes, accuracy with the football. It’s not one thing, it’s multiple things we’re trying to correct. We’re trying to get it right. I thought we got off on the right start on the first play of the game last week. Felt like there were some things that we did do that were positive as far as those things are concerned.”

He also pointed to youth at some positions, field position, and against Tennessee, for example, a series of penalties.
