South Carolina kicked off the spring game season with its intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, and offense was the theme of the day. The Black squad defeated Garnett 35-24 behind the arm of Jake Bentley, the hands of Bryan Edwards and the legs of Ty’Son Williams.

All three of those players will be keys for a successful 2017 season, too. Bentley looked sharp in the passing game, and outside of one poor throw that was intercepted, Bentley looked sharp. And it’s obvious his improvement this spring. That should have South Carolina coaches and fans excited ahead of his sophomore season.

Afterward, coach Will Muschamp seemed pleased with his team, particularly the offense, as he addressed the media. Here’s what he had to say:

  • Muschamp said that due to the amount of returning talent, the offense is farther along, just as he expected.
  • He was specifically impressed with the offense’s adaptability, getting out of bad plays and overcoming obstacles. He said that Jake Bentley’s maturation had a lot to do with this and that the unit as a whole looked much more poised than last season.
  • The usually defensive-minded coach said that the other side of the ball has some work to do, but he’s not worried because they still have players that haven’t arrived on campus yet. He said that the coverage was suspect at times.
  • The big news of the day was an injury to DB Jamarcus King. Muschamp said that he’ll be lifting in a few weeks despite a plate being put in his arm.
  • As for special teams, Muschamp said that kicker Alexander Woznick had a fantastic spring. He noted that he was 21/23 in the spring in one-minute situations.
