While many look at Will Muschamp as having to fill the shoes of legendary coach Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, the new Gamecocks coach doesn’t see it that way.

He doesn’t want to make people forget about the most successful era in school history. He wants Spurrier to help him restore it.

According to The Greenville News, Muschamp wants the Head Ball Coach to be involved with the Gamecocks to some degree.

“He came by the job before Christmas,” Muschamp told The Greenville News. “We sat down and had a great talk. He’s still got a locker in the lockerroom for him when he wants to work out.

“I think it is really important to have he and (Spurrier’s wife) Jerri (Spurrier) involved. A lot of these kids came here because of him. I know her involvement at practice and all that. That’s awesome to me.”

So while Spurrier’s shadow will loom large over Muschamp, it looks like Muschamp wants to make sure that it’s in full color and visible to everyone.

“For them to be involved is important because I think you always, as a coach, need to embrace the tradition and the history of the program and they have a huge, prominent part in our program and always will.

“I think it is important for them to be around.”
