South Carolina didn’t waste any time finding the end zone in Saturday night’s SEC showdown against Mississippi State.

On the Gamecocks’ opening possession, Spencer Rattler connected with wide receiver Xavier Legette and the South Carolina speedster did the rest for a 76-yard touchdown.

Legette now has 22 receptions for 367 yards and has recorded his second touchdown of the 2023 campaign.

Rattler has looked like one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC despite the Gamecocks’ (1-2) start to the year. He came into Saturday with 954 passing yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on the year.

South Carolina entered the game as a slight favorite over the Bulldogs and if the Gamecocks are going to get it done, it will mean an impressive showing from Shane Beamer’s offense. That’s exactly the kind of start South Carolina wanted in its first home game of the year.

The Gamecocks dominated the first quarter, keeping Mississippi State off the scoreboard and winning the time of possession battle, possessing the ball for nearly 10 of the opening 15 minutes.

Will Rodgers was held in check in the first quarter, completing just 3-of-5 attempts for 42 yards.

Rattler kept the momentum rolling to start the second quarter, connecting with Trey Knox for a 17-yard touchdown pass. But Mississippi State followed it up with a 65-yard touchdown bomb from Rodgers to Lideatrick Griffin to make it 14-7 with nearly the entire second quarter left to go.
