Underdog Fantasy: College Football Contests

Underdog Fantasy is an online daily fantasy contest provider that allows users to participate in fantasy contests with real money at stake for a variety of sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and more. While daily fantasy has been around for years, Underdog Fantasy is a new company on the scene backed by individuals such as Mark Cuban.

One of the key features of Underdog Fantasy is its daily contest format (not dissimilar to previous daily fantasy providers), which allows users to draft new teams and compete in short-term leagues that last just one day or one week. This allows users to stay engaged with the platform and compete in multiple leagues throughout the season, rather than being tied to a long-term commitment.

In addition to its daily contest format, Underdog Fantasy also offers a variety of contest types for users to choose from. These include traditional head-to-head leagues, tournaments, and pick’em style games where users can predict the outcomes of specific games or events. This gives users a range of options to suit their preferences and playing styles.

College Football and Daily Fantasy

College football has often lagged professional sports as the sport of choice for both traditional fantasy sports leagues and the newer daily fantasy formats. There are a number of reasons for this that smart people can point to, of course. College football has much less uniformity compared to, say, NFL where every team has the same salary cap and there is a tremendous amount of parity generally speaking. In college football, you have a wide range of “haves” and “have nots” and that’s even within the major conferences. Additionally, the competition varies tremendously depending on the region or conference. Simply put, college football is messier.

Additionally, the data isn’t as standardized for college football as it is for NFL. A major area you can see this in is injury reports. While the NFL has injury reporting policies which are uniform across the league, the college ranks is much less structured with injury reporting. Sometimes, it’s incredibly opaque. As such, it can make it harder to participate and stake real money in fantasy contests if the information you’re getting on player availability isn’t guaranteed.

Despite these limitations, college football fantasy contests have taken a leap forward, and this is primarily via the form of Underdog’s pick’em contests.

Underdog Fantasy’s College Football Contests

Let’s get into some specifics of the Underdog college football offering. Here are some key points:

You might be asking… this seems pretty limited for college football? Yes and no. It’s true that the fantasy contest options are more limited for college football, but as you’ll see below, the pick’em contests do, in fact, provide a very robust offering for college football fans looking to get a little more action on their favorite college football games and teams (especially if sports betting is not legal in your state).

College Football Pick’em Contests

How do the pick’em contests work? They are similar to player prop bets in you are familiar the traditional sports bet. Essentially, you pick a player and a statistical category and make a pick about whether they will be over or under that number. For NBA, it might be Lebron James higher or lower than 27.5 points tonight when they play the Clippers. For the NFL, it might be Jalen Hurts higher or lower 2.5 passing touchdowns when they play the Cowboys this weekend. And for college football, it might be Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker higher or lower 285.5 passing yards against Georgia.

But, there’s another layer. You have to string together at least two picks to enable an actual contest. You can string together as many as five. The more you string together, the higher the “multiple” or potential payout. To win the contest, you have to be correct on every pick you string together. Hence, why the multiplier goes up quite a bit as you add more picks.

The Multiplier

The multiplier refers to the payout potential depending on how many picks you select. Here is how it works:

Now you can also add “insurance” which gives you some leeway if you miss one of your picks, but it also reduces the multiplier. Insurance is only available if you do 3 or more picks. You cannot insure a pick’em string of 2 picks. Here are the multipliers with insurance added in:

3 Picks:

Notice how if you get all 3 correct, you are still only getting a 3x multiplier, where the uninsured payout of 3 out of 3 (shown above) pays 6x multiplier. So, if you insure your picks, even if you don’t need it because you got all of them right, your payout is lower because you added insurance anyways.
