Cosmo Cougar had his work cut out for him, no matter how you slice it.

BYU’s football mascot was trying to rile up the home crowd in Provo on Saturday night as the unbeaten Cougars were sleepwalking their way through a very important Week 12 game against Kansas. The game was hard enough for BYU, which was trying to keep its College Football Playoff hopes firmly intact by improving to 10-0.

Then, while the Cougars were struggling to get past the Jayhawks and avoid a disastrous loss, disaster almost struck Cosmo Cougar, who was just trying to provide some entertainment between whistles when he took a big running start before trying to back-flip his way over a moving golf cart.

Not exactly a simple cheer standing stationary from the field, right? Well, Cosmo hit what looked like the top of his arms/costume head on the cart as it zoomed by, drawing similar gasps from the crowd that were heard during the actual game, as BYU ultimately fell to unranked Kansas, 17-13, to suffer its first loss of the season and put its Playoff hopes in jeopardy.

Back to Cosmo Cougar, who managed to regain his footing and his focus before tweeting out a reassuring post to his fans: “I’m just glad my head stayed on this time,” the mascot posted on his social media account.

As it turned out, Cosmo Cougar did a better job of avoiding disaster on this night than the BYU football team did.
