Maryland defender ejected after flying targeting hit on Illinois QB
Lavonte Gater left the Maryland-Syracuse game early after he launched himself into Illinois QB Brandon Peters on Friday night.
In the scoreless game, the Terrapins somehow avoided a score on the series where the Illini attempted a 26-yard field goal that was missed. The Gater play was reviewed and confirmed and he was ejected from the game.
However, credit goes to Peters, who managed to complete the pass to Joshua McCray for a 40-yard completion.

Lavonte Gater didn’t need to launch himself that high when Illinois QB Brandon Peters was already tied up below his waist. But even though he’ll miss the rest of the game for targeting, he’s bailed out by Maryland’s defense who gets a 3rd-down stop and blocks an Illini FG.
