Don’t expect recruiting to fall off any at Texas A&M with Jimbo Fisher’s arrival. Former Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin brought in Top 20 classes on a consistent basis, but Fisher figures to continue that trend if not improve it measurably with his name recognition and a highly impressive resume that includes national titles both as head coach at Florida State and as the offensive coordinator at LSU.

Hitting the ground running is probably how Fisher would best describe his first couple of weeks in College Station. He had to, with the early signing period beginning Dec. 20.

“This new signing day has changed everything,” Fisher said in a recent ESPN Gameday interview. “You used to have a time to get your feet on the ground, to get your staff through that. You have to do both on the run because with the new early signing period you have got to get out and see the kids and make sure you make an impact quickly. It’s been a whirlwind just trying to get out and make sure that we make contact with all of the recruits.”

Fisher’s first verbal commitment illustrates what he hopes to do with the Aggies offense as he begins to build a roster to try to rival the best the SEC has to offer. Junior college tight end Jace Sternberger typifies the kind of athlete Fisher hopes to bring to Texas A&M.

At 6 feet 4 and 240 pounds, Sternberger is the prototypical tight end in a Fisher offense. Not only is he adept in the trenches, where Fisher’s FSU teams have been so successful, but he’s agile enough to include in the West Coast offense.

A 3-star as ranked by 247sports.com, Sternberger is not only Fisher’s first verbal, but also the first verbal in the Class of 2018 outside of Texas. The Oklahoma native represents Fisher’s broader aim to reel in top prospects. Fisher also hopes to pull in Louisiana 5-star WR Terrace Marshall despite his heavy lean towards staying at home with LSU.

Attrition doesn’t seem to be a problem with the new regime. The Aggies have had just two decommits since Fisher’s arrival and one of those, 4-star S Leon O’Neal Jr., is likely to wind up in College Station. The local prospect made an official visit to Texas A&M on Dec. 9.

Fisher hopes to strengthen the trenches on defense with a couple of 4-star defensive ends: One a local talent, Joseph Ossai (6-4, 220), and the other Californian Jeremiah Martin (6-5, 240).

The Aggies are also looking to reload at wide receiver. With verbal commitments already from one 4-star and two 3-star recruits, Fisher looks to add Houston 4-star prospect Jaylen Waddle.

Obviously, quarterback is the key position and Fisher would like to put his stamp on the program by bringing in a top-rated prospect. That’s easier said than done, but despite young talent already on campus in Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond, Fisher has also offered 4-star dual threat QB Justin Rogers. The Louisiana native is leaning toward TCU, with LSU also among the frontrunners.

So, with a very abbreviated recruiting season, Fisher is just starting his attempt to transform Texas A&M into a powerhouse the likes of his former employer — Florida State.
