Chris Del Conte has shed some light, and offered some clarity, on the SEC’s long-awaited move to a 9-game schedule.

Asked if Texas will play any Big 12 teams, the Texas athletics director said it will depend on if SEC plays an 8-game or a 9-game conference schedule. He explained that it might come down to if any Big 12 schools would be willing to play only in Austin, as opposed to a home-and-home.

The Texas athletics director also pointed to the kickoff time for the Oklahoma game, typically at 11 a.m. locally, but Del Conte said he’d support a shift to 2:30 p.m., an idea he called “fantastic.”

“We have 8 games scheduled right now,” Del Conte said this week at a town hall meeting. “We’re working on going to a 9-game schedule, but we have a ways to go with that. I would say this year we have an 8-game schedule. The following year, we have another 8-game schedule. Then we’ll look at going into a 9-game conference schedule.”

Perhaps most importantly to SEC faithful, Del Conte discussed the Longhorns’ scheduled to visit College Station on Saturday, Nov. 30. And how he wants to restore other traditional aspects of that game.

“My goal is that we move that game back to Thursday,” Del Conte said of the rivalry which will resume this year for the first time since 2011.
