Former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Tampa, Florida, over the weekend. Sumlin currently serves as Maryland’s co-offensive coordinator.

That news was first reported by The Diamondback’s Taylor Lyons on Monday night. The arrest occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, per the report. Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test at the scene, per a Hillsborough County police report obtained by Lions.

This incident took place over the Terps’ bye week. Lyons’ report says that a Maryland football spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sumlin is in his first season as Maryland’s co-offensive coordinator. He’s worked at a variety of programs over the course of his coaching career, which included head-coaching stints at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.

Sumlin was last a head coach for the Wildcats from 2018-2020. He parted ways with the program after turning in a record of 9-20 over three seasons.

Sumlin previously had a longer stint as Texas A&M’s head coach. His time with the Aggies included an 11-win campaign in 2012. He was A&M’s head coach when Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy — just the second Aggie to win the honor in program history.

Maryland is set to take on Northwestern on the road in Week 9.
