Jimbo Fisher has decided to move in a new direction for Texas A&M’s starting quarterback.

The Battalion reported that as of Thursday, Max Johnson was named the starter for Saturday’s game against No. 13 Miami. Fisher has said throughout this week that “We’re repping our guys” and looking at everything, including possibly giving up the play-calling duties.

Last week, the Aggies lost to Appalachian State 17-14 as Haynes King went 13-for-20 passing for 97 yards. After the game, Fisher said the Aggies would “evaluate everything,” and do “whatever we have to do to be successful.”

Johnson announced a transfer to Texas A&M from LSU about 9 months ago. Johnson at LSU last season was named the Tigers’ starting quarterback following an injury to Myles Brennan before the season. He played in 12 games in 2021 and threw for 2,814 yards and 27 touchdowns with just 6 interceptions.

Johnson notably against Texas A&M last season went 22-for-38 passing in the regular season finale for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 27-24 victory as LSU finished 6-7 last season.
