Jimbo Fisher opened spring practice on Monday, and announced several staff changes and player absences.

Fisher said, while there are no significant position changes among the players, Dameyune Craig will be back coaching wide receivers and James Coley will be back coaching tight ends. About retaining offensive line coach Steve Addazio, Fisher said, “I think he’s a very good coach. He’s a very productive coach. He’s done it for a long time, and I think he’ll do a good job.”

As for the absences, Fisher said the following players would miss spring practice: Hunter Erb, Bryce Foster, Matthew Wykoff, Trey Zuhn, Max Wright, Deuce Harmon (will return before spring is over) and Jaden Platt. Also transfer wide receiver Tyrin Smith is considering whether or not he will stay at Texas A&M or “go back” to UTEP. Smith will miss some or all of spring practice as a result.

Fisher explained that he never made a decision about bringing on new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino to Texas A&M until after Petrino left Missouri State for UNLV.

Fisher on hiring Petrino: “After meeting and talking to him, we thought it would be a good fit.”

About play calling, Fisher said, “We’ll go through that as we go. I plan on him making calls. I plan on him calling plays. I don’t have a problem with that at all.”

Fisher was asked about name, image and likeness, and said the coaches and players don’t worry about it.

“That’s why Ainias (Smith) has been as productive as he has,” Fisher said. “When you keep the main thing the main thing, it’s incredible how successful you can be.”
