Mike Elko has officially been named Texas A&M’s head coach.

After a crazy weekend, that involved a complicated exchange with Mark Stoops, the Aggies announced that Elko is officially the head coach. The news was first reported Sunday afternoon and made official Monday morning.

It’s Elko’s second stint with Texas A&M, as he served as the team’s defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021 before taking over as Duke’s head coach for the 2022 and 2023 season.

“Coach Mike Elko is one of the best leaders and coaches in college football and has had high-level success at each stop of his career,” Texas A&M athletics director Ross Bjork said. “He is known amongst coaching circles as one of the best defensive minds in the country and has shown his ability to lead and turn around a program as a Power 5 head coach.”

Texas A&M is looking to Elko to be the coach that gets the Aggies over the hump. While Texas A&M has had success since joining the SEC, it has yet to reach the next level of becoming a CFP contender.

“Coach Elko has a vision for Aggie football, and a specific plan for innovation and greatness which is exactly what our program needs right now to compete in the modern era of college athletics,” Bjork said.
