Mike Elko is adding San Diego State safeties coach Kyle Hoke to his staff at Texas A&M as a defensive analyst, according to a report from FootballScoop’s John Brice.

The Hoke name should be a familiar one. Kyle is the nephew of former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke. His father, Jon, is also the secondary coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Hoke has been working on his uncle’s staff at San Deigo State for the last four seasons.

Before that, he had previous stints at Indiana State (2019), Texas State (2018), Division III John Carroll (2017), South Carolina (2015-16), Army (2014), and Western Michigan (2012-13).

Elko is rounding out his initial staff in College Station. Hired in late November to replace Jimbo Fisher, Elko is looking to provide the same kind of jolt he gave Duke when he stepped in.

The Blue Devils went 3-9 in 2021 (the year prior to Elko’s arrival) and had lost 17 of their previous 18 conference games. In Year 1 under Elko, Duke surged to 9-4 and posted its first winning record in conference play in eight years.

Under Fisher, things soured over the last two seasons in Aggieland. The Aggies opened the 2022 season at No. 6 in the AP poll but finished at 5-7 with a 2-6 record in league play. Fisher was fired after a 6-4 start to the 2023 season, and A&M finished with a 7-6 mark. Fisher ended his six-year tenure with just two winning seasons in SEC play.
