Sometimes the best way to fight disappointment is to work harder.

May was a disappointing month for Texas A&M in recruiting. It had a major decommitment followed by a coaching meltdown on Twitter, which led to more decommitments.

But June was a tremendous bounce back month for Sumlin, who remains on the hot seat despite having the best four-year record of any Texas A&M coach in the last couple of decades and facing much harder opposition than any of those previous coaches did. But I get it, demands at Texas A&M are high because that national title from 1939 is still kind of lonely in there.

So let’s take a look at the Aggies’ recruiting haul for June.

Player Position Stars H.S. State
Kellen Mond Quarterback 4 Florida (via Texas)
Santino Marchiol Linebacker 4 Florida (via Colorado)
Creed Humphrey Offensive lineman 4 Oklahoma
Keldrick Carper Athlete 4 Louisiana
Travis Etienne Running back 3 Louisiana
Keynel McZeal Tight End 3 Texas
Camron Horry Defensive End 3 Texas
Debione Renfro Athlete 3 Texas

Not bad eh?

Couple of things about this group stick out.

They got a quarterback: There was a lot made of A&M losing the soft commitment of Tate Martell. Maybe a bigger deal was made than there should have been. I’m not saying I’m not a fan of Martell, but I have some questions about how well his skill set would transfer in the SEC against pass-rushers that can match his speed. Mond is a San Antonio-area prospect moonlighting at IMG Academy for the year. He’s a little bigger than Martell and he’s got good arm talent, but Mond is definitely raw. Whether Mond will get the development he needs at IMG remains to be seen, but over the next few years we’ll see Mond along with former IMG’ers Deondre Francois (FSU) and Shea Patterson (Ole Miss) work out. Solely from a recruiting standpoint, this is a heck of a bounce back for A&M.

It’s a diverse group: Carper looks like he’ll grow into an outside wide receiver and Renfro should develop into a safety, so that’s five offensive prospects and three defensive prospects. A couple of linemen in the group, a running back, a tight end. Overall, the Aggies met a lot of positions on both sides of the ball. With two quarterbacks in the class, they should be done recruiting that position. I expect them to possibly go a little heavier on defense down the stretch, especially at linebacker and defensive line.

Recruiting flexibility in the fall: The June commitments gives A&M 16 verbals for the year and a current class rank of seventh nationally. That ranking is going to fall, and if all things remain fairly equal, it will be somewhere around 13-15th nationally. But if A&M can keep the majority of these guys in the class, they should have the flexibility to cherry pick and go after the major prospects that will be making their decisions later in the year or around National Signing Day. Now they can focus all of their recruiting energy on their top remaining targets.
