Report: Texas State hires former Texas A&M assistant as next coach

On Wednesday, a former SEC assistant earned a head coaching job when Bowling Green hired Scot Loeffler to lead its program.

Just a few hours later, Texas State made sure that trend continued.

The Bobcats have hired former Texas A&M offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital to take over their program, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman tweeted Wednesday. After leaving College Station in 2015, Spavital spent one year with Cal before joining Dana Holgorsen’s West Virginia staff.

Spavital coached the Aggies from 2013-15 and had a hand in recruiting 5-star quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Kyle Allen, both of whom transferred around the time of his departure.

Ole Miss offensive coordinator Phil Longo had reportedly interviewed for the job at Texas State, which fired Everett Withers on Nov. 18 in the midst of another losing season.

With Spavital and Loeffler, who spent time at both Florida and Auburn, both getting hired within hours of each other, it has been a good day for former SEC coaches.
