Jeremy Pruitt took the podium after Tennessee’s second scrimmage of the fall on Saturday, and the Vols’ coach gave several updates regarding his team.

That included defensive playcalling as Pruitt told the media that he’ll “probably” be the one calling defensive plays this season. He said any coach on his staff could do it, but it will likely be his responsibility.

One hot topic during the preseason has been the ongoing quarterback competition, but Pruitt didn’t have much of an update there. All four quarterbacks had equal playing time during the scrimmage.

“I think eventually, when the first guy or the second guy or the third guy shows himself, we’ll whittle it down,” Pruitt told the media, including David Ubben of The Athletic. “Until then, we’ll stay status quo until we figure it out.”

The quarterback battle is most likely between redshirt sophomore Jarrett Guarantano and redshirt senior Keller Chryst, although Pruitt hasn’t ruled out the other quarterbacks on the Vols’ roster.

Pruitt had several other updates during his meeting with the media:

  • Wide receiver Jauan Jennings participated in the scrimmage after being limited earlier in the week.
  • Middle linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. did not participate in the scrimmage after having three straight maintenance days.
  • Pruitt still expects linebacker JJ Peterson to enroll and be on the roster this season, but the 4-star signee is currently finishing up a class. Tennessee’s classes begin on Wednesday.
