Florida backup quarterback Austin Appleby is filling in for the injured Luke Del Rio against Tennessee this Saturday, and the lack of film on the Purdue transfer might make him difficult to prepare for.

Volunteers coach Butch Jones doesn’t see it that way.

“Appleby has experience, and you can’t put a value on that,” Jones said Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference. “He understand their scheme and offense… The good thing for them is they have players all over their team. They do a good job of utilizing their guys. I know exactly what they are telling him: ‘You don’t have to win the game, just manage the game.'”

Jones touched on several other topics as he previewed the top-20 showdown, which begins at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

On why the Florida-Tennessee rivalry is special:

“The passion and magnitude of it. The fans, the boosters, the alums, the energy has a lot to do with it. The last couple have been close, that helps it too.”

On the rash of injuries have struck his team so far:

“Well that’s true, but that’s football. It’s the next-man-up philosophy. We are missing some key players but that’s an opportunity for young players to step up.”

On needing to finish games:

“(There’s) no need to remind our team of that. They understand what happened last year.”

On maintaining consistent approach given the importance of this game:

“Every game is critical, every game counts and every game matters. Next week’s game will be big too. It comes down to preparation and performance. It’s consistency, understanding every game is important because we don’t want them to get off their routine.”

On the physical nature of Tennessee:

“We continue to be a work in progress. On the offensive line, we get Chance Hall back … We stress physicality, and we’ve been dealt adversity and we’ve handled it well.”
