The Tennessee football program held its collective breath over the injury to starting middle linebacker Darrin Kirkland.

An all-conference performer out of Indianapolis, the sophomore was carted off the field during the win over Virginia Tech this past weekend. It appeared at first glance to be a very serious injury — which would’ve been a massive blow.

Head coach Butch Jones addressed the injury during his weekly press conference. The news was better than expected — with Kirkland suffering a high ankle sprain. He’ll be out this weekend against Ohio. After that, his status will be week-to-week.

This is truly great news for the Volunteers. Kirkland is the heartbeat within the defense. He’s welcomed the role of making the requisite calls at the line of scrimmage. Kirkland is also a very instinctual player in regards to seeking out opposing skill players with reckless abandon.

UT can only hope Kirkland heals quickly before jumping into the meat of its conference schedule.
