Tennessee basketball turnover may not be over just yet.

Redshirt freshman DJ Burns has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz. Burns remains at UT, but by entering the portal, it allows other schools to have contact with him.

Burns redshirted during his first season in Knoxville. The former 4-star prospect and Rock Hill, South Carolina, native signed with Tennessee in 2018 after reclassifying from the 2019 class. He was the highest-rated recruit on the Vols team this past season.

Earlier this year, the Knoxville News Sentinel spoke with Burns about redshirting, and he was on board with the decision.

“I decided to redshirt before I even committed,” Burns said during the NCAA Tournament. “That was one thing. I wanted to make sure I was in a position to help these guys when I play. I felt like I couldn’t have kept up at that time because my conditioning wasn’t in a good place.

“I just came in to help however I can.”

The 6-foot-8 forward worked hard to get his body in shape and in condition this past year. He lost an estimated 30 pounds once he got on campus.

“Honestly, I don’t have a role I want to come in and be,” Burns said earlier this year. “I want to do whatever I can to help the team, whether it be rebounding or scoring or whatever it takes to win.”

It appears things have changed with Burns. However, it’s important to remember that just because he entered the portal doesn’t mean he’ll ultimately transfer. He can always stay at Tennessee.
