Tennessee lost QB Quinten Dormady on Monday, as he announced his plans to pursue graduate transfer options.

That leaves the Vols with Jarrett Guarantano as the starter, a role he filled for several games in the second half of the 2017 season.

However, no one is quite sure what Jeremy Pruitt and the Vols’ new coaching staff thinks of the rising redshirt sophomore, and on Tuesday, Yahoo! Sports reported that Wagner QB Alex Thomson is drawing interest from the Vols:

Thomson will graduate from Wagner, an FCS school on Staten Island, this spring and expects to have two years of college eligibility remaining. He’ll be immediately eligible for the 2018 season. He received his release from Wagner last week, and schools with initial interest in him include Tennessee, FIU, Iowa State and Oregon State.

He’s already drawing rave reviews, including from Super Bowl winning QB Phil Simms, who has been working with Thomson:

“He can play at any level,” Simms said. “There’s no question. If things fall right [with his college situation], I definitely think he’s a pro prospect. I don’t even have to hesitate to say that.”

Thomson ran a wing-T offense in high school, which is why he wasn’t a highly regarded college prospect. However, his performance at Wagner, an FCS school, has turned him into a prospect with a lot of FBS options heading into 2018.
