Rick Barnes made history in Tennessee’s 86-51 win over Texas A&M on Saturday night.

Barnes became just the 15th coach in division I men’s basketball history to record 800 victories. Barnes, who has earned 192 of those wins at Tennessee, is 4th amongst active D-I coaches behind only John Calipari, Rick Pitino and Bill Self.

The SEC acknowledged Barnes’ accomplishment shortly after the game:

Barnes’ career has included head coaching stints at Tennessee, Texas, Clemson, Providence and George Mason. He’s been a head coach since the 1987-8 season when he led the Patriots to what was then just their 3rd 20-win season in school history.

A little over half of Barnes’ wins (402) came during his 17-year run at Texas. He coached all-time great players such as Kevin Durant and TJ Ford during his time with the Longhorns. He also led that program to 15 NCAA Tournaments, 3 Big Ten regular season titles and 1 Final Four.

This season, Barnes has Tennessee in the mix to potentially earn a No. 1 seed for the first time. UT has been a No. 2 seed on 3 ocassions (including once under Barnes in 2019), but has never been to the top-line. The Vols have never reached the Final Four and only have 1 Elite Eight appearance in program history.

Tennessee will host Auburn in a top-25 matchup on Wednesday.
