Tennessee baseball advanced to the Super Regional round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament after beating 3-seed Charlotte Sunday evening.

That win was far from Tennessee’s toughest win of the Clemson regional, though. The Volunteers are only moving on to the Supers because of their clutch 14-inning victory over host Clemson Saturday night.

Down to their last strike, the Vols took the lead with a 3-run shot by Zane Denton in the top of the 9th inning. Clemson, not to be outdone, tied things up the following frame to push the game to extras.

What followed was an almost absurd display of defensive baseball by both squads. Neither team could plate a run until the Vols broke through in the top of the 14th inning, winning 6-5.

Because the Vols won Saturday night, they were well in the driver’s seat moving into Sunday. They only had to win once more to move on to the second weekend, whereas Clemson and Charlotte would have had to win 3 times.

It was an excellent game with a lot on the line. Perhaps because of that, not to mention the fact it lasted for over 5 hours, ESPN revealed Tuesday that the game was the most-viewed matchup of the regional round, amassing 736,000 viewers.

It is also the 2nd most-watched regional game on record.

This comes in the middle of a strong regional year in general. The 2023 regionals were the most-watched in over a decade, according to ESPN PR.
