If you re-build it, they will come. And they did, in hundreds of thousands decked out in orange and white, filled with hope for something to be hopeful for.

Tennessee saw its first sellout opening game at Neyland Stadium in seven years last night. Not since 2007 had the Vols pre-sold every ticket to their first home game. 2007 was also the last season Tennessee truly had relevance. The Vols squeaked into the SEC Championship later that year before losing to eventual National Champion LSU. Since, Tennessee has seen four different coaches and only one winning season (7-6, 2009).

Butch Jones has sparked a weary fan base. There is now optimism in Knoxville and last night’s game provided the best example. The level of fan support is worth noting, especially coming off a 5-7 season. Tennessee is still in the rebuilding process, but may be farther along than most imagined. Had they previously seen last night’s crowd, they might have imagined differently.

There was a different feeling in the air at Neyland Stadium. Students weren’t just “going to the game to go” as they had in previous years. This fan base was on its feet from kickoff to the final whistle. The new Lil’ Jon sample with “3rd Down for what?” on the jumbotron had the student section amped. Even older fans were standing in support, which may have been the most impressive feat of all.

This fan base has a much different vibe than in recent years passed and its because they actually have something worth cheering. Whether the talent is at the ideal level or not, there is still optimism moving forward. It’s no longer a form of masochism to watch this team play. Fans play a major role in the college football experience and Tennessee may have finally recaptured its home field advantage.
