Tennessee fans blasting report of Greg Schiano hiring on Twitter
On Sunday afternoon, a report came out that Tennessee was zeroing in on a replacement for fired coach Butch Jones.
According to USA TODAY reporter Greg Schiano, the Vols are working on a deal with Ohio State DC Greg Schiano.
Wolken broke the news on Twitter, saying the Vols hope to make Schiano their new head coach by the end of the day:
Tennessee is finalizing the deal with Schiano. Hopes to name him later today, per person with direct knowledge.
— Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) November 26, 2017
Was that a legitimate report or just a smokescreen used to gain fan interest? If it was the latter, it is very clear that Vol Nation would be very upset with AD John Currie if Schiano gets the job.
As you can see from just a small selection of the responses to Wolken’s tweet, Volunteer fans are none too happy with this latest rumor about their next head coach:
@John_Currie you're about to lose a whole fan base. Don't do this.

If Schiano is in, I am out.

@John_Currie If true, UT athletics will NEVER see another dime of our money.

Hope the good people of Knoxville burn that city down. @John_Currie has just lost an entire fan base

We will never support Tennessee again @John_Currie

So UT has just given up?
Because that what happens when you dig around the coaching dumpster and dredge up Schiano.— J. Shaka (@jjshaka) November 26, 2017

If this is true I'm done being a Vols fan. pic.twitter.com/jSqxncHOzn

Based on this reaction, Tennessee will either find a new head coach or Vol Nation is about to get a lot smaller.
If this happens, there is gonna be alot of blow back. Folks here know Schiano is not the guy. Jones 2.0 and everyone knows it. Currie better tread lightly. Players are pissed about to leave, fans are pissed, and humpty dumpty is about to fall again.
B.Chip, who did you expect Gruden?
LOL
Hope it’s not true, would be really disappointing hire with UT’s resources. Mullen to UF Not surprising.
Tennessee had a shot to get Mullens, it appears Florida is going to secure him. I don’t think this is a bad hirer though, probably second best guy available. Who would’ve been better? A guy who hasn’t coached in 10 years? The pirate, a mediocre coach who has been fired everywhere he’s been? A guy who had one spectacular year with some upsets at Iowa State? A Pac 10 guy in the SEC? Vol fans need to accept reality.
Currie doesn’t actually pull the trigger does he?
Do not walk under anything a Vol fan can jump off if this happens. Trust me Knoxville.
Not the sexy pick but the guy can coach and apparently is a pretty good recruiter from what I read. Not thrilled but if he’s the guy we have to give him a chance. We are 2-3 years away still regardless of who we hire.
I felt the same about Muschamp. Just give him a chance and he may surprise you. We were a 3-9 team in 2015. Two years later we’re an 8-4 team. I think the fan base will stick around even though you didn’t get the “sexy” hire.
What planet do UT fans live on? Gruden was always a fantasy, and a dumb one at that. This guy is a significant upgrade over Butch Jones, Derek Dooley and Kiffin. The guy won at a pit (Rutgers), and he’s worked with Urban Meyer, one of the top two or three coaches in the country. Mike Leach? Really? A flake who’d never win more than 8 games. Sorry, Mullen can do a whole lot better than UT, and evidently is going to. You’re a dumpster fire right now. You’d be lucky to get a guy this good.
I wouldn’t trust anything I hear until I hear it from Currie. No one on this site or any other site has been right yet, so why would we listen to this article. Please fans don’t over react, until you hear from Currie. This site is not accurate it just reports what it reads elsewhere.
