Tennessee fans call for Nico Iamaleava to start remainder of season after loss to Alabama
Tennessee is now out of the race for the SEC.
Hopes were small to begin with, but the Vols still had a shot if they were able to down Alabama in Tuscaloosa Saturday. Instead, the Vols choked away a 20-7 lead and now sit at 5-2 on the season.
Joe Milton was objectively not the problem with Tennessee’s loss to the Tide. However, some Vols fans (perhaps more than you’d think) are ready to move on from Milton and would rather see former 5-star freshman Nico Iamaleava under center for the remainder of the season.
Their reasoning makes sense. Milton’s time at Tennessee is drawing to a close while Iamaleava’s is just getting started. With only a bowl game to look forward to, Tennessee fans want to see a change and growth heading into next season. What’s the point in continuing on this path with Milton?
It’s a sound argument, but not one Josh Heupel would likely agree with. His job is simply to win football games and he’s unlikely to go away from Milton for a true freshman – regardless of how talented that freshman is – more than halfway through the season sitting at 5-2.
We’ll see. For now, here’s some of the best reactions calling for Iamaleava to see the field the remainder of the season.
I’ve said it multiple times on @FOXSportsKnox. Start Nico for the UConn game, and let him play until it’s ugly.
I don’t blame today on Joe. At all. But, if Nico’s the next guy, let him get in-game reps.
If he rides the bench the rest of 2023, he’ll be at Oregon in 2024.

Start Nico and UCONN and let him play the rest of the season. We need to start thinking about the future.

At what point does Tennessee start to think about Nico Iamaleava at quarterback?

Scenario 1: Nico is good, you do great for the remainder of 2023 and get him experience
Scenario 2: Nico struggles, you now have game film to show transfer QBs during the off-season to make sure you’re set in 2024 either way
Scenario 3: You play Joe and go into 2024 blind

What good does going 8-4 with Joe Milton do. The playoff expands to 12 teams next year. Be forward thinking. Figure out what you have with Nico. That’s all that matters.

1) Heupel is to blame today
2) Now is the time. https://t.co/RzFEO7uGNZ

Whispers:
Next year there is a 12 team playoff. Joe Milton won’t be here next year. Nico will.
Prepare.

Vols aren’t ready to win against good teams on the road yet. Gotta stack some top ten recruiting classes. Think it’s time to start getting Nico some reps too. But still think Vols will beat Georgia in Neyland.

Fire Heupel if Nico doesn’t start next week. I’m done with Joe. Forget it.

Start Nico. Cash In the season. I’ve seen enough of flat footed Milton’s sorry ass.
