Tennessee and Pittsburgh are set to play in a nonconference game at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 11 and the contest will be an opportunity for each program to pay tribute to a shared icon. The two programs announced on Wednesday the game’s designation as the “Johnny Majors Classic,” named in honor of the late legendary head coach and player.

Kickoff for the Week 2 matchup is set for noon Eastern time on ESPN.

Majors had 2 stints at Pitt, spanning 1973-76 and 1993-96. He led the Panthers to the 1976 national championship. In between, he coaches at Tennessee, his alma mater, from 1977-92. He led the Vols to 3 SEC championships. Over his iconic career, he amassed a record of 185-137-10.

He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987 as a player, as he was a key piece of the Vols’ backfield from 1954-56. He had his jersey — No. 45 — retired by Tennessee in 2012.

Current Tennessee coach Josh Heupel and Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi both issued statements on the Johnny Majors Classic news:

“Coach Majors was synonymous with Tennessee football and that has become even more apparent to me in my short time in Knoxville,” Heupel said through a school-issued press release. “He always preached ‘attack, attack, attack’ to his teams, a mantra we still apply today. It’s only appropriate that the two programs he impacted the most will honor him with a game in his namesake, and we are proud to take part in it.”

“This is an incredibly fitting tribute for Coach Majors, a true coaching legend who made such a lasting impact at both Pitt and Tennessee,” said Narduzzi.

The 2 programs will play in the second edition of the Johnny Majors Classic on Sept. 10, 2022, at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
