Josh Heupel has never won a game at Tennessee when scoring under 30 points. That is, until about 45 minutes ago on Saturday evening.

Tennessee has now won 13 straight games at home following a 20-13 win over Texas A&M Saturday. The defense and a huge punt return from Dee Williams gave the Vols just enough to get over the top against a good Aggies squad.

And the Vols’ head coach was fired up postgame, though he did admit Tennessee needs to tighten up some things on defense.

Here’s a few comments from Heupel’s postgame press conference:

For one, Heupel was, as always, very high on the crowd at Neyland Stadium. Make no mistake, the Vols’ defense was fueled by the crowd. This game played on a neutral site could have been a different story.

But if pigs could fly…

The Vols passing offense struggled Saturday, but Tennessee got a huge spark from Dee Williams’ punt return for a touchdown to make it a 14-10 ballgame.

Heupel said it completely changed the game:

But ultimately, the Vols don’t win without an otherworldly performance from the defensive unit. Tennessee picked off Max Johnson twice in the 4th quarter to put things away, held one of the better offenses in the conference to just 13 points and looked dominant while doing so.

The Aggies did not score a touchdown following their opening drive. That’s tough.

Heupel was as pleased as anyone:

Tennessee is back in action against Alabama next week in the Vols’ biggest game of the year thus far.
