A lot has changed for Jarrett Guarantano in the last few months.

He watched an entirely new coaching staff come into Knoxville and implement a brand-new system. Jeremy Pruitt brought in USC quarterbacks coach Tyson Helton to revamp Tennessee’s offense, which has gotten some solid reviews so far.

That includes Guarantano.

The Tennessee signal-caller has been working out with quarterback coach George Whitfield at Nashville’s Montgomery Bell Academy this month. According to Whitfield, Guarantano expressed nothing but excitement to be in Helton’s new system.

Here was what Whitfield had to say about Guarantano’s impressions of the new offense during an appearance on WGFX-FM in Nashville:

“Guarantano, he was the most excited about the call when Coach Pruitt came in,” Whitfield said. “He studied him. He’s very meticulous, and he said, ‘If history is any indication, this is going to be a great system for me.’ He’ll tell you he was thrilled. Kids honestly want that opportunity. They want to showcase the fact that they can come in and fly a true NFL-modeled aircraft. That’s what they want.

“It’s fun to play at Oregon and it’s fun to play at the other places and they’re going to put up an awful lot of points, but quarterbacks who wake up and see themselves as a quarterback, they want that credibility. They want the verification and validation of handling all these nuances of offensive system. Pruitt’s bringing that and Guarantano’s excited about that.”

Pretty much anything would’ve been better than what the Vols ran in the final year of the Butch Jones era. It was Guarantano who was tasked with making the best of a bad situation under former offensive coordinator Larry Scott.

It’ll be interesting to see if Guarantano winds up being the best fit to handle the expected dual-threat responsibilities in Helton’s offense, or if it’ll be Stanford graduate transfer Keller Chryst who ultimately wins the job.

Perhaps Guarantano running a system more catered to his skill set will yield better results in 2018.
