Texas’ running back room has been bitten by the injury bug again.

On Tuesday, the program announced that Christian Clark will not play in 2024 after tearing his Achilles. The news comes less than a week after the Longhorns lost returning standout CJ Baxter to a torn LCL and PCL.

A true freshman, Clark is a Phoenix, Arizona native who arrived in Austin out of Mountain Pointe High School. As a recruit, he was rated 4-stars, the No. 6 player in the state of Arizona, No. 23 running back and No. 339 prospect overall in the Class of 2024 on the 247Sports Composite.

Clark was a notable recruiting win for Steve Sarkisian’s staff. He picked up scholarship offers from 27 programs, including Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee, Clark took visits to Texas, Oregon and Florida State before signing with the Longhorns.

After losing two running backs, Texas is looking at an RB depth chart of sophomore Jaydon Blue, sophomore Quintrevion Wisner and true freshman Jerrick Gibson. On Monday evening, Texas insider Anwar Richardson posted on X that the staff was considering adding another body by moving redshirt freshman receiver Ryan Niblett to running back.

Texas checks in at No. 4 in the preseason AP Top 25. The Longhorns open the 2024 season against Colorado State on Aug. 31 (3:30 p.m., ESPN) before a Week 2 road trip for a showdown with No. 9 Michigan, the defending national champion. Sark’s squad plays its first SEC contest on Sept. 28 when Mississippi State comes to Austin.
