Everyone knows about Georgia’s running backs.

Todd Gurley, who is now sidelined with a torn ACL, was an early season favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Nick Chubb, a true freshman, has taken the SEC by storm with 1,039 yards and 6.84 yards per carry.

However, Georgia’s upcoming opponent — Charleston Southern — has a running back of its own that can carry the offense.

Senior tailback Christian Reyes leads the Buccaneers in rushing this season with 871 yards and seven touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 218-pound back from Rogue River, Ore., is coming off a 188-yard and two touchdown performance against Liberty, a team Charleston Southern hadn’t defeated in nine years.

Reyes was awarded the Big South’s Offensive Player of the Week honor.

This weekend’s matchup against the Bulldogs isn’t Charleston Southern’s first crack at an SEC team this season. The Bucs faced Vanderbilt earlier in the year and nearly came away with a road victory, losing 21-20.

Charleston Southern outgained the ‘Dores by 94 yards and racked up nearly 200 rushing yards. With an average of around 230 rushing yards, the ground game remains the focal point of the Bucs’ offense.

“On offense, they’ve got nine returning starters,” UGA head coach Mark Richt said on Tuesday. Their run game is outstanding. They rush the ball extremely well. They are averaging 230 yards a game rushing … their offensive line is very versatile.”

Georgia’s run defense has been up and down this season. The unit struggled against Florida and Kentucky, allowing 418 and 214 yards, respectively. But last week, Georgia held Auburn, the SEC’s leading rushing team, to just 150 yards and returned back to its early-season form of one of the conference’s best run defenses.

Coming off a huge win against Auburn and with an in-state rival staring them in the face next week, the Bulldogs could be in for a bit of let down this weekend. Although UGA is more talented across the board, the lack of focus can often eliminate any talent discrepancy.

It’s for this reason that Richt is making sure his guys are as focused and ready to play this week against Charleston Southern like they were last week against Auburn.

“These guys are really good. The more I watch them,” Richt said, “the more I see why they’re winning. The more I see why they’ve got a lot of great momentum going on. They’re physical. They’re well coached. You can see on film when a team is believing and these guys are believing. They’re going to be a great opponent for us this weekend.”
