South Carolina quarterback Brandon McIlwain is already on campus, and a lot is expected of him. There should be because he’s the No. 2 dual-threat QB in the Class of 2016.

However, he’s also a highly coveted prospect on the diamond as well.

That wasn’t an issue after McIlwain initially said football would be his priority in the spring. Now, his focus will be baseball for the next several months if he wins a starting job with the Gamecocks baseball team, according to The State.

McIlwain came to that decision after speaking with both football coach Will Muschamp and baseball coach Chad Holbrook about it. Here’s what Holbrook told The State on Tuesday:

“I don’t want to put too much on him, but the generic discussions are this: if he’s in our starting lineup, and he’s playing, he can go to football in his free time. If he’s coming off the bench for us or a substitute player for us and there are some football responsibilities for that day, that’s where he needs to be.”

Holbrook talked about McIlwain being able to pull off the difficult feat of making an impact as a two-sport athlete.

“The reason I think Brandon can do it and succeed is he’s a very disciplined kid. When I spoke to (South Carolina men’s basketball head) coach (Frank) Martin, he said the same thing about Bruce Ellington, and he had some success obviously doing both … Brandon wants to be the best baseball player he can be. He wants to be the best quarterback he can be.”

Obviously, the Gamecocks are in need of a quarterback, so those in Columbia can only hope to get the most out of his talents under center.
