If South Carolina’s offense can’t get it together in the next week, Gamecocks fans should expect to see a lot of visor tossing from the Head Ball Coach in next week’s spring game.

Steve Spurrier was displeased with South Carolina’s offense in Saturday’s scrimmage, saying that none of quarterbacks played well and that he doesn’t expect to name a starter until the end of the summer. He said the Gamecocks would “go through the summer, in all likelihood” to evaluate the quarterbacks on the roster before naming a starter.

“The offense didn’t do much at all,” Spurrier told reporters following the scrimmage. “The quarterbacks, none of them shined too much, I don’t think. It was not encouraging on the offensive side.”

Spurrier, never shy to let the media know what he thinks of his players, had some criticisms for redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch, viewed as the favorite to win the starting job for the 2015 season.

“Connor Mitch held the ball too much at times,” Spurrier said when asked about Mitch running with the ball. “He threw late at times, as did all of (the quarterbacks), but the protection probably wasn’t all that super at times, either.”

The protection issues shouldn’t come as a surprise, but they are a concern. South Carolina is missing several players along the front line, while others are limited by injury this spring.

Spurrier did give his offense some credit, saying it played much better in Friday’s practice than it did on Saturday. He also credited the defense with improvement, another limiting factor for the offense on Saturday.

The HBC also talked about Brendan Nosovitch after news broke on Friday that the former four-star quarterback recruit has decided to transfer. Nosovitch had shuttled between tight end and quarterback over the last year, and after flirting with transferring last year decided to pursue playing time under center elsewhere.

“He needed to leave,” Spurrier said. “He wants to go play quarterback, he doesn’t care whether its small-level, Division III, whatever, he wants to go play quarterback somewhere, so I hope he can.”

Spurrier also added that quarterback Lorenzo Nunez, an incoming freshman who will figure into the QB competition this fall, has been on campus to observe practices, something Spurrier thinks will help get him up to speed once he gets to campus.

South Carolina has one more week of practice before playing its spring game next Saturday, April 11. Spurrier hopes to see a lot of improvement before then.

“We’ve got one more week. Hopefully by the spring game time next week, we can throw some completions and look like we know what we’re doing on offense.”

In the interim, Spurrier heads to Tampa to watch South Carolina’s women’s basketball team play in the Final Four. The Lady Gamecocks take on Notre Dame in the national semifinal on Sunday night.
