Kentucky is one of those rare teams that has a 2-0 record heading into Week 3, but still has plenty of room to get better.

The Wildcats had a 33-10 lead over Louisiana-Lafayette in the third quarter of the opener, but needed a touchdown run in the final minute to win, 40-33.

Then, at South Carolina, Kentucky raced to a 24-7 half time lead — a score that doesn’t really reflect just how badly it outplayed the Gamecocks in those two quarters — before weathering a rally to hang on for a 26-22 win.

So, as the Wildcats take aim at their first 3-0 start since 2010 — and at snapping a 28-game losing streak to Florida that dates back to 1986 — coach Mark Stoops believes that his team can play even better going forward.

“I know we can play a lot better and there are a lot of things that we need to get ironed out and fix,” he said. “That is what’s great is we have a great opportunity this week against a very good team that has beaten us for a very long time and we have to go do something about it. We have to continue to improve fundamentally and do the little things.”

Here are five players to watch as Kentucky tries to make that happen:

1. QB Patrick Towles — The junior quarterback will need a good game if Kentucky wants to take down Florida. He’s completing 58.7 percent of his passes this season, with 449 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

He had 369 yards and three scores in a 36-30 overtime loss at Florida last year, but he also had three interceptions. I don’t think he has to throw for that kind of yardage, but avoiding interceptions should be his top priority.

2. RB Stanley “Boom” Williams — The sophomore is quietly (outside of Lexington, anyway) having a remarkable season. He has 242 yards and a score on just 24 carries.

That’s a first down every time he touches the ball, average-wise.

He didn’t really figure into last year’s contest, carrying the ball only twice for two yards. His workload has been pretty light so far this season, with 10 attempts in the opener and 14 last week. While Jojo Kemp (and possibly Mikel Horton) will also feature in the Wildcats backfield, the success for the rushing attack in this game is likely to hinge on Williams.

3. WR Dorian Baker — Baker had a key drop on the first drive against South Carolina, and a catch would have, at the very least, gotten the Wildcats out of their own end zone — possibly avoiding the interception that immediately followed. He bounced back with four grabs for 51 yards against the Gamecocks.

The sophomore may get the chance to make a big play or two in the Gators secondary on Saturday night. He needs to take it.

4. LB Josh Forrest — He was an all-conference selection in 2014, and the senior linebacker is playing to that standard again so far this season.

He leads the team with 22 tackles, and he also has an interception and a sack. He had 10 tackles in last year’s contest against Florida, and he figures to be busy again this week.

5. LB Khalid Henderson — The senior is also off to a fast start this season with 20 tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.

Florida has allowed three sacks in two games against teams that don’t have SEC talent in the front seven, so Henderson could have the chance to make a few plays in the Gators backfield — and put some pressure on whomever happens to be lining up at quarterback for Florida.
