The Washington think tank “New America” ranked the current top 25 college football teams based on academics.

Using a formula largely based on graduation rates, New America also compares each university’s graduation rate to that of the football team.

Passed along by Time magazine, here’s the reworked top 25:

1. Northwestern
2. Notre Dame
3. Stanford
4. Clemson
5. TCU
6. Alabama
7. Temple
8. Florida State
9. Michigan
10. LSU
11. Baylor
12. Ole Miss
13. Utah
14. Florida
15. Oklahoma
16. Houston
17. Tennessee
18. Ohio State
19. Iowa
20. Oklahoma State
21. Oregon
22. Michigan State
23. USC
24. North Carolina
N/A: Navy

The SEC’s academics actually look pretty good in this ranking. Alabama and LSU are top-10 teams among this group based on academics, while Ole Miss, Florida and Tennessee spread out nicely between 12 and 17.

The Big Ten, whose fans often like to brag about its academic standards, did claim No. 1 overall with Northwestern, and Michigan also made the top 10. But Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan State all ranked below the lowest SEC team.

North Carolina, which has endured a massive academic scandal, ranked last.

New America did not rank Navy because it doesn’t provide some of the data used in the formula.
