Mike Bianchi decided to set fire to his Twitter mentions with his Friday column, in which he weighs in on the recent Nick Saban vs. Bear Bryant debate by declaring that former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden trumps both.

“Call me a State of Florida homer if you want, but I still maintain Bobby Bowden is the greatest college football coach to ever prowl the sidelines,” the Orlando Sentinel columnist writes.

Anticipating a barrage of counterpoints based on national championships, Bianchi states that he puts more stock in overall wins.

“Granted, Bear has six national titles, Saban has five and Bowden only has two,” Bianchi writes. “But Bowden has more overall victories and did something Bryant, Saban and Joe Paterno never did. He created something where there was nothing.”

The columnist builds his opinion around the fact that Alabama football had already achieved success before the arrival of Bryant, and obviously Saban. Bianchi stresses that Bowden built the Florida State program from scratch.

Bianchi’s column will certainly have many SEC and ACC fan bases buzzing.
