If you ever wondered how serious college football is in southern states, look no further than the recent law passed on athletics open record requests in Georgia.

On Monday, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a new law into effect that would give athletics departments of state universities up to 90 business days to respond to an open records request.

A report from Bulldogs beat writer Marc Weiszer cites a very telling quote from Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle on the topic:

“I hope it brings us a national championship is what I hope.”

There’s no doubting allegiances or motives based upon that statement.

Among other advantages, this law was reportedly put into place to held guard against requests for recruiting information.

It has been nicknamed “Kirby’s Law,” given that new Georgia coach Kirby Smart met with state legislators in February to discuss the topic of a new law.
