Former Vanderbilt player and NFL referee dies at age 83

A longtime NFL referee and ex-Vanderbilt football player died on Saturday at the age of 83.

Art Demmas, who spent 28 years working NFL games, is a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and has received the Vanderbilt Legend’s Award.

Demmas was a co-captain on the 1956 Commodores squad and was a four-year starting offensive tackle. He was a member of the 1955 squad that defeated Auburn in the Gator Bowl.

Before retiring as an NFL referee in 2006, Demmas worked four Super Bowls — XIII, XVII, XXV and XXVIII

The St. Louis native will be missed by both the Vanderbilt and NFL communities. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made for Demmas.
