GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida coach Jim McElwain addressed the media for the first time since Friday’s scrimmage, the second of fall camp, and he had a positive evaluation to pass along.

“Obviously since the last time we visited we had a chance to have a really good scrimmage on Friday,” McElwain said. “I thought we were able to get some really good situations come up in the scrimmage. We had some turnovers, which we’re obviously not excited about as far as the ball security piece. We had three of those in the scrimmage. We’ve got to get better at that.”

A pair of youngsters on defense were praised Tuesday.

“Defensively, I thought Jabari Zuniga is doing some really good things as are some other guys up front,” McElwain said. “Vosean Joseph is really showing up every time we go out there. That’s really good news from that standpoint, some of the young guys.”

Transfer receiver Dre Massey was one of the offensive standouts, as well as multiple ball-carriers.

“I thought our running backs really did a nice job as well (especially Jordan) Scarlett,” McElwain said. “Cronkrite got a little banged up, so we’re holding him out even today and probably tomorrow. Should probably get him back on Thursday. Lamical Perine really showed up. Some of the young guys got a lot of reps in the scrimmage.”

Perine is a true freshman in a crowded backfield of veterans, but could earn playing time.

“I tell you what, he’s a guy that runs with great pad level,” McElwain said. “He’s slippery in there. I mean, guys bounce off him, and he’s really strong, he’s got a great stiff arm and he’s done some really good things.”

On Thursday of last week, Luke Del Rio was named starting quarterback. The coach said it gave the signal-caller a boost heading into Friday’s scrimmage.

“He definitely had a little bounce and that was good to see,” McElwain said.

On the injury front, McElwain said he hopes to have WR C.J. Worton back by the week. Offensive lineman Andrew Mike remains out with no timetable for a return.
