The Battle at Bristol might not be for a few more weeks, but that’s not a lot of time in the world of college football.

For coaches, preparation means everything, and it’s a lot easier to prepare when you know which players you will face. Tennessee got a big piece of information on Thursday when Virginia Tech announced Jerod Evans would be the team’s starting quarterback for Week 1.

Evans, the No. 1 dual-threat junior college quarterback for the 2016 class, won the Hokies’ quarterback competition, at least in the short term. Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente indicated other quarterbacks could see playing time against Liberty.

While playing in eight games for Trinity Valley Community College last season, Evans averaged 395.5 yards per game and accounted for 38 touchdowns.
