History suggests comebacks bode well for Tennessee’s title chances

Tennessee’s habit of getting down early before pulling out wins late probably isn’t great for its fans’ collective blood pressure.

But the Volunteers might be onto something there.

ESPN found that two of the last three SEC teams to come back from double-digit deficits four times in a season have ended the season as national champions. Tennessee has already hit that mark five games into the season, and while Vols fans would probably prefer more comfortable wins, it’s an encouraging statistic nonetheless.

But Tennessee still has several hurdles left on its schedule before a national title can even be considered. The next one comes at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday when the No. 9 Vols (5-0, 2-0) visit No. 8 Texas A&M (5-0, 3-0) for a huge SEC battle.
