It’s not really coaching carousel season until you hear Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen’s name being mentioned as a possible candidate for a job opening.

Whether it’s Michigan, Miami and now Oregon, Mullen’s name has been attached to several job openings over the years. Despite all the speculation, the MSU coach has stayed in Starkville for eight seasons now, and barring an unexpected move, will be the Bulldogs’ coach for the 2017 season.

Following the latest speculation involving Mullen’s name with the Pac-12 program, Michael Bonner of The Clarion-Ledger reached out to the MSU coach for comment. While Mullen admitted schools have contacted him, he declined any interest in leaving Starkville.

“I don’t like commenting on other jobs, I’ve had several schools reach out to me this year,” Mullen said, according to Bonner. “I’m very happy at Mississippi State and I think we’re working on an extension for me to stay there.”

Mississippi State recently hired John Cohen, the school’s former baseball coach, as its new athletic director following Scott Stricklin’s departure to take the same job at Florida. Cohen was a member of the MSU athletic department that originally hired Mullen from Florida, giving him his first opportunity as a head coach.

If Mullen is serious about staying in Starkville, Cohen’s first order of business should be locking up his coach to an extension to secure his future at Mississippi State.
