Former Alabama DE Jonathan Allen arrives at the NFL Scouting Combine as a projected early pick, but just how high he’s drafted may depend on how teams view his shoulders.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network notes that Allen is doing the bench press, an excercise he didn’t often do at UA, to show that his shoulders are healthy. Afterwards, the team doctors on hand in Indianapolis will want a closer look.

Rapoport shared Crimson Tide team doctor Lyle Cain’s assessment:

Alabama team doctor Lyle Cain told me he knows that when teams examine the scans of Allen’s shoulders — both of which have been surgically repaired — they will say at first glance, “Man, he’s got some beat-up shoulders. But they don’t know the story.”

Allen had labral tears in both shoulders during his career at Alabama and he deals with arthritis in one and mild arthritis in the other. Cain says the important detail is that Allen’s play hasn’t been affected.

“Jonathan has really played without symptoms in his shoulders, and it’s something that has not affected his performance or function,” Cain told Rapoport. “It doesn’t have to be treated during the season. And he’s had a couple of great years.”

Cain will tell interested teams that Allen won’t be affected on the field by his repaired shoulders.

“Both of them have been repaired and healed,” Cain said.
