The strange saga that has been former Mizzou LB Aldon Smith’s life took another turn on Thursday morning, when he was reportedly a passenger in a car that ran into an unmarked police car.

According to ESPN, Smith was detained in the incident. However, he spoke with reporters after leaving the police station, which you can see in the above video, and proclaimed his innocence:

“If I did something, I would be in jail right now. Like, I didn’t do anything,” Smith says in the video, while appearing to be intoxicated. “So we need to, if you guys want to talk about me, like, let’s make these stories a little bit better and let’s put me in a better spotlight. Stop making me seem like I’m some badass criminal, because that’s not who I am; I’m a good person. I’ve never done anything.

“I’ve never hurt anybody and I’m not that type of person. So, let’s start replacing these stories. That’s your story, all right? Get out my face now, please.”

Whether or not Smith did anything wrong, it’s not a good look for him as he argues for reinstatement into the NFL this month.

Smith, who has been arrested five times since he was a first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, was suspended for the entire 2016 season.

When he’s on the field, though, Smith is a star. In 2011, he burst onto the scene with 14 sacks as a rookie. He followed that up with a brilliant sophomore campaign, recording a whopping 19.5 sacks for the 49ers.

He hasn’t played a full seasons since 2012, though, with legal incidents hampering his ability to stay on the field.

His reinstatement hearing scheduled for later this month will go a long way in determining whether he ever steps foot on an NFL field or not, but at the moment, Smith certainly isn’t doing himself any favors.
