In the history of bold statements in the world of college football, this latest take from Paul Finebaum has to rate way up there.

With Alabama projected to send another plethora of talent to the NFL in the upcoming draft, some are questioning how this core of players only achieved one national title during their time in Tuscaloosa. Among them is SEC Network host Paul Finebaum, who came on for his regularly scheduled Monday morning interview with The Opening Drive on WJOX.

During his segment, Finebaum made the bold claim that winning half of the last eight national titles could be seen as underachieving for Nick Saban’s program.

“I just kinda shook my head thinking about the talent on this team and what we will see go in the draft Thursday night and what we have seen over the last 10 years,” Finebaum said on the air. “It’s amazing to say but I think Alabama may have actually underachieved in winning only four of the last eight national titles. It’s a crazy statement, but I don’t ever think I’ve seen a better collection of talent in a period of time and while anyone would be happy to play for the national championship, I think Alabama may have left one or two on the table somewhere.”

As wild as Finebaum’s statement may seem at first, you have to consider how many times the Crimson Tide nearly captured other national titles in recent seasons. Of course, last season the Tide lost on essentially the last play of the title game, in 2014 the Tide lost to eventual champion Ohio State in the national semifinal, and in 2013 the Tide’s shot at a title was taken away following the Kick Six play in the Iron Bowl.

After taking all that into account, should Alabama have another trophy or two in its title case at the end of the day?
