Two weeks into fall camp, senior Danny Etling still holds a firm grasp on the starting quarterback duties in Baton Rouge. That being said, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron was notably positive Wednesday when discussing what he’s seen from true freshman Myles Brennan so far in camp.

There may not be another elite program in college football that’s as starved for solid quarterback play than LSU. The Tiger have not had much consistency under center since Zach Mettenberger left the program in 2013 and even he only provided two seasons of truly significant play for the program.

After signing two four-star prospects in Orgeron’s first signing class, LSU fans are hopeful one of the players will come thru and deliver on the hype. Judging by Orgeron’s comments following Wednesday night’s practice, Brennan has flashed the natural talent that made him such a coveted high school recruit.

“Myles Brennan comes from a passing offense. He is a natural thrower,” Orgeron said during his media availability. “He still has to learn the offense, obviously, still has to be more comfortable with his reads, but his release and his ability to throw the ball is very special.”

The praise from the LSU coach didn’t stop there, either.

“I’ll tell you what, it’s fun to see. It’s fun to see that ball come out of his hand but you know what, we are going to have to bring him along when he’s ready,” Orgeron continued. “We are not going to throw him into the fire, that’s the worse thing we could do. We need to let him develop, let Lowell Narcisse develop, and give them an opportunity to compete — and when they are ready, give them a chance.”

So does either player have a good chance to start this year? Orgeron isn’t ready to go that far.

“Right now, Danny is still our No. 1 quarterback,” Orgeron said.

Orgeron went on to say the competition for the starting spot will proceed as camp continues to progress and that even if Etling remains the starting quarterback, his team would ideally get the young quarterbacks on the field as often as possible.

At least for now, there’s hope in Baton Rouge that the issues under center could soon be coming to an end under Orgeron’s leadership.
